Installation and Setup

Q

I have downloaded the HP JetSpeed program. What do I do now?

A

Run the downloaded file to install the HP JetSpeed program on to your machine. Make sure you remember the location where you have saved the downloaded file to.

Q

The Setup program prompts me "Would you like to set the HP JetSpeed Screen Saver as default?". What does this mean?

A

If you reply "Yes" to this prompt then the HP JetSpeed Screen Saver will become the active Screen Saver on your machine.

If you reply "No" to this prompt then the HP JetSpeed Screen Saver will still be installed on to your machine, but will not be activated. To enable the Screen Saver at a later date, use the Control Panel's Display/Screen Saver option to select the HP JetSpeed Screen Saver.

Q

The Setup program prompts me "Would you like to be notified when a network game is about to start?". What does this mean?

A

The HP JetSpeed program allows up to 4 players to race against each other over a network. If you reply "Yes" to this prompt then a popup window will inform you when another player in your domain starts a multi-player game.

If you reply "No" to this prompt then you will not be informed when another player in your domain starts a multi-player game. It is possible however to still have this option enabled at a later date. See the notes in the Network Questions topic.

If your machine is not part of a network, or you do not wish to participate in Multi-player network games then click the "No" button.

Q

What does the Setup program install to my machine?

A

The Setup program will automatically install the following files to the C:\Program Files\Jetspeed directory on your system :

AUTOSTAR.EXE, JETSPEED.EXE, README.TXT, LANGUAGE.DLL, PACK1.DLL

In addition the Screen Saver module (JETSPEED.SCR) will be installed to the Windows directory.

The Setup program will also create an HP JetSpeed group folder in the Program folder on the Start Menu. This folder contains the following items :

HP JetSpeed, Network, ReadMe and Uninstall

See the section on uninstalling if you wish to remove the HP JetSpeed application from your system.

Q

OK - I've installed the program. How do I run the HP JetSpeed program and start racing?

A

There are several ways of starting the HP JetSpeed program. These are outlined below :

In the HP JetSpeed group folder in the Program folder on the Start Menu select the Hp JetSpeed option.

If during the Setup process you replied "Yes" to the prompt "Would you like to be notified when a network game is about to start?", then you may have noticed a traffic light icon () in the tray area of the Windows Taskbar. Right-clicking or Left double-clicking the mouse buttons over this icon will present a menu. Select the Launch HP JetSpeed option.

See the notes in the Network Questions topic for details of the other options in this menu.

General Questions

Q

I don't have a mouse on my system. How can I navigate the HP JetSpeed User Interface?

A

Use the cursor keys ( , ¬ , ¯ ,® ) to move between all options available on each screen. Use the <Return> key (¿ ) to select the highlighted option.

During game play, the F10 key will return you to the Main Menu.

The PAGE UP/DOWN keys will move forward/backward through the Racetips section.

ALT-F4 will close the program at any time.

Q

How can I hide the program when my boss suddenly appears?

A

Use the ESC key to put the program in 'Boss Mode'. This will hide the HP JetSpeed program until you press any key or click the screen with the mouse.

NOTE : Boss Mode is not available on the Multi-player Select Track and Connection screens.

Q

Who or what is the Controller?

A

When playing a Multi-player game, Player 1 is always the controller. The controller's machine is responsible for keeping the whole communication process between multiple players synced. In addition, the controller is responsible for any JamCars in the game and for starting and finishing the race.

Q

I sometimes find that none of the keys respond - why is this?

A

If you have other programs open in the background, these may on occasion try and jump into the foreground. If this happens then all keyboard input will be directed at this program instead of HP JetSpeed. Use the mouse to click on the HP JetSpeed window and to return the keyboard focus to it.

It's best not to have any other programs open, if possible, while running HP JetSpeed.

Q

What can I do to optimise my system for running HP JetSpeed?

A

Try some of the following :

If your display adapter is running in a mode other than High Colour (16 bit) then try changing your display settings so that you are running in High Colour (16bit) before launching HP JetSpeed.

Changing the Hardware Acceleration option for your graphics card - some systems work best with the Hardware Acceleration turned off while others work better with it on.

HP JetSpeed is a fairly processor intensive application. Try and run it with the minimum amount of other applications open.

The more free physical RAM available to HP JetSpeed, the better the program will run. Free up physical RAM by closing any memory intensive applications before you launch HP JetSpeed.

Q

I need to remove the HP JetSpeed application from my system. How do I do this?

A

The HP JetSpeed application comes with an uninstall program to remove all installed files from your system. To run this program, select the Uninstall option from the HP JetSpeed group folder in the Program folder on the Start Menu. Hit the "Uninstall" button to remove the application.

Unlocking Extra Cars

Q

What do I need to do in order to unlock the extra cars?

A

There are 4 new cars to unlock. In order to get each one, you must achieve the Qualify Time for each of the 3 tracks. Each track that you qualify on will unlock a particular car. Once you have qualified on all 3 tracks, you must then qualify again (on any one of the 3 tracks) to download the 4th car. The table to the right outlines this.

You can unlock the cars in any order, but you can't unlock the Ferrari F355 until you have qualified on each of the 3 tracks.

Track

Time

1

01:30:00

London Taxi

2

01:43:00

Dodge Pickup

3

02:00:00

Q

OK - So once I have qualified on a track, how do I actually unlock a new car?

A

When you achieve a Qualifying Time on any of the tracks, the RESULTS screen immediately following the game will display the following graphic with a flashing message telling you to "Click Here".

Clicking on the cup will display a congratulations message and also present a URL (http://www.hp.com/go/racing). Click on the URL to launch your Web Browser and upload your Race Time and receive a code to unlock the relevant car.

Q

Does this mean I have to have Internet access on my machine to unlock the new cars?

A

No - When you achieve a Qualifying Time an HTML file will be created in the C:\Program Files\Jetspeed directory for the name that you qualified with. I.e If you qualified with the name FRED, then a file FRED.HTM will be created. Using a floppy disk or network copy, you can transfer this file over to another machine that is Internet enabled and receive your unlock code that way.

Q

So now I have my unlock code - what do I do with it?

A

On the SELECT NAME screen there is a button labelled 'Unlock Vehicle'.

Click on the name in the list of registered players that you wish to unlock a car for (it must be the same name that you used to receive your unlock code with) and then click the 'Unlock Vehicle' button. This will display a dialogue box enabling you to type in your unlock code. If you are successful then another dialogue box will appear with the word 'Congratulations' in it!

HINT: You can use the Windows Clipboard to cut and paste the Code from the Upload Web page to the Unlock Car dialogue box.

Network Questions

Q

My friend and I would like to play a Multi-player Network game. When I start a Multi-player game my friends machine and mine can't see each other. What's wrong?

A

Assuming you are both physically on the same Network, both logged in to the same Domain (or Workgroup - NT Machines Only) and the Network is functioning correctly, then it is possible you are both trying to communicate via different protocols. See the following sections.

Q

What protocols are supported by the HP JetSpeed program?

A

The following protocols are supported via the Microsoft Client for Networks Client :

 TCP/IP

 NetBEUI

 SPX/IPX

In order for the protocols to work, they must be bound to the Microsoft Client for Networks Client. See your System Administrator if you are unsure of which protocols you have on your machine or whether they are bound.

Q

How do I change which protocol is used by the HP JetSpeed program?

A

From the HP JetSpeed group folder in the Program folder on the Start Menu select the Network option.

Alternatively select the Configure Network… option from the Traffic Light icon () in the system taskbar tray area.

This will display the following dialogue box :

If there are no protocols listed (other than NONE), then it means that you do not have any of the correct protocols installed on your machine OR they are not bound to the Microsoft Client for Networks Client. If this is the case then see your System Administrator to have one of the required protocols installed and bound.

In order for Multi-player games to be played, all the players involved must have the same protocol selected and all be logged onto the same Domain (or Workgroup - NT Machines only).

To change the protocol that is used by the HP JetSpeed program, simply highlight the required one from the list and hit the "OK" button.

If the NONE protocol is selected then Multi-player games will not be possible and the Multi-player notification box will not be displayed.

Q

Every time someone on the Network starts a Multi-player game, I get a popup window informing me! Its great, but I'm trying to work. How do I stop it appearing?

A

If the popup window is active, then click on the 'Multi-player Notification' button, shown below :

This will stop the window from appearing next time someone starts a Multi-player game, providing there is no (Ö) in it.

If the popup window is not active then follow the instructions in the next section.

Q

I turned off my Popup Window, and now I'm missing out on all the fun! How do I get it back?

A

From the Traffic Light Icon () in the Windows Taskbar tray area, select the Auto Notification option. If a tick (Ö) appears next to it then the popup window is active. Otherwise it is not active.

If you do not have the Traffic Light icon in the Windows Taskbar tray area, see the following section for setting it up.

Q

When I installed the HP JetSpeed program I replied "No" to the prompt "Would you like to be notified when a network game is about to start?". I now want to be informed when a Multi-player game is about to start - how can I do this?

A

The AUTOSTAR.EXE program is responsible for informing you when a network game is about to start. You can either run this program directly (from the C:\Program Files\Jetspeed directory on your system) or add it to your Startup directory (via the Start Menu - Settings/taskbar…/Start Menu Programs [tab]/Add… option).

If you place it in your Startup directory then it will be active every time you boot your machine.

If you run the program directly then it will be active for that Windows session only.

Q

Occasionally when I try and join a Multi-player game, I unexpectedly end up at the Main Menu again. What's going on?

A

This means that something happened on the network as you were trying to join a game, that caused a network-syncing problem. This is JetSpeeds safeguard against potential network problems causing errors during the game. Try joining the game again and things should be resynchronised.
